Fire Safety Order: Your responsibility
Fire Safety Order: Your responsibility
Making sure the working business premises are up to standard for the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the legal obligation for anyone who has control over the building, or a degree of control over certain areas or systems. A fire-risk assessment must be carried out by a competent person to assess that the premises, as far as reasonably practical, and are safe enough that in the event of a fire anyone in the building can escape safely.
Even if your building has been designed and built in line with the modern building regulations you are still required to carry out a fire-risk assessment and ensure that all fire precautions and routes are maintained.
If you are deemed to be the responsible person you must ensure:
- Taking fire precautions to ensure the safety of employees and premises
- A risk assessment must be carried out
- Arranging planning, organisation, control, have jurisdiction, maintaining, and on-going assessment of the environment in relation to fire risks.
- Reducing or preferably eliminating risk of dangerous materials
- Building needs to be equipped with passive and active fire safety equipment that is compliant
- Routes and exits must be kept clear at all times.
- Planning, actioning, reviewing, and amending the procedure for events such as fire drills should be done regularly.
- Individuals should have their access to areas reviewed, no person/s should have entry to areas they are not permitted or even required to be in.
- All equipment should be regularly maintained, and if needed repairs should be carried out or a replacement should be purchased.
- An appropriate amount of responsible people should be appointed to allow for people to still carry out the duty if others are on leave etc.
- Training for employees and responsible people should be arranged.
- Collaboration and cooperation between responsible employees should be regular scheduled to share any information that is relevant to fire safety.
