The Importance of the Fire Sprinkler System
Fire Sprinkler System: Introduction
The automatic fire sprinkler system has been around for over 150 years protecting property and saving lives. Fire services across the country recognises and supports the sprinkler system in their ability to fight the spread of fire in the early stages. Sprinklers not only fight fires and save lives but they are particularly good at dramatically reducing the volume of smoke produced, the water also cools the smoke making it less harmful upon inhalation.
The sprinkler system works by detecting extreme heat using the filament bulb within the sprinkler head. The ink inside the bulb then expands with the rise of heat causing it to break the glass; the plug is released followed by the flow of water. Due to the design the chance of it going off by accident is around 16 million to one, meaning peace of mind for you. The design means it creates less water damage than a hose and the sprinklers will only be set off if they are above the flame. There are design options available including concealed sprinkler heads for as more tasteful design meaning most people are unaware they are even there.
Building regulations in England now require sprinklers to be installed in flats in new residential blocks over 30 metres high, and 18 in Scotland. In Wales sprinklers are required in buildings like purpose built and converted care homes, halls of residence and hostels of any height since April 2014.
Sprinklers can:
- Reduce the risk of death and injury from fire
- Reduce the risk to firefighters
- Protect the premises
- Reduce effect of arson
- Minimise environmental impact of fire
- Reduce fire costs consequently potentially lowering financial and community impact
